About Your "Instructor"

My name is Tim Gross, and I've made my living playing keyboards for the last 35+ years. I've performed with Robin Zander (Cheap Trick), Terri Nunn (Berlin), Tommy Tutone, Chuck Negron (Three Dog Night), Greg Kihn, John Waite, Sammy Hagar, Mickey Thomas (Starship), Kevin Cronin (REO), George Thorogood, and currently tour nationwide with Rick Springfield.

Most of what I learned taking piano lessons ended up being useless to me for what I wanted to do.ย  (So I'm not going to show you that stuff, heh.) In my line of work I need to learn songs quickly. Here's what I AM going to show you:

  • How to easily play ANY Major and minor chord, and every Major and minor scale
  • The simple patterns your left hand should play so you can "set and forget it"
  • How to "dress up" the way you play your right-hand chords so they sound beautiful and professional
  • How to play DOZENS OF SONGS - starting right now - within the next 20 minutes
  • Simple way to not get confused about black notes (sharps and flats)
  • How to play the basic timing/counting that 90% of songs you'll ever want to play use
  • How to use the sustain pedal properly to immediately sound more like a pro

  1. This is the only way I can contact you .i had some issues with my PC and phone now I am having problem loging into my course
I will appriciate your help. Thanking you.
    Victor.

  2. Hey Tim. Love the lessons so far. However there is one thing I’m still confused over, and I’d hope you could shed some light on this. When going through learning the scales/chords and or chord shapes using your method, I’m confused on where exactly to place my fingers (like where to place them when ascending or descending with a scale, or where to place what fingers when playing chords). Is there a way to figure out the finger placement for this.

    I appreciate the help.

    • What fingering to use depends on what you’re about to do next, and at first it probably feels laborious trying to work that out, and eventually it becomes second nature.

Example: If I were to play the C-Major chord C-E-G I’d normally use my 1-3-5 fingers. That way my 2nd finger and 4th finger are right over the 2 and 4 notes if I want to alternate playing 1-3-5 with 1-4-5 (called a sus4) or 1-2-5 (called a sus2). However, if the next chord I was about to play were these notes C-F-A (that’s called an F Major chord 2nd inversion, which isn’t important right now) I’d probably use my 1-2-4 fingers on the C-E-G notes, that way my 3rd finger is right over the F and my 5th finger is right over the A, making it easier to move to that chord.

FYI when you become a Piano Genius member, there are really helpful Modules on chord inversions, and focusing on fingering when anticipating changing to different chords. It’s definitely a bigger topic than can be completely explained here. ๐Ÿ™‚ Hope that helps!

    • Absolutely Sue, just put in your email to get a direct download of the printable PDF (recently new and improved, by the way), and you’ll also get updates on more free piano training videos coming out as well.

  3. Hi Tim, found your very interesting piano course on a Google search and I watched your intro video and was impressed. My situation is I have a Casio clone keyboard and a large modular Synth setup, I built the MFOS systems for myself. I am running a Kawai Spectra through a Midi to CV to the synth. Now that I have the instruments its time to learn, I am 59 years old and almost retired and want to enjoy the instruments, will your course help with the situation I am in, a lot of the synth stuff I want are mainly solos due to the fact with my small midi controller it is low note priority so its monophonic. Any tips for me through your course would be helpful.

  4. I am interested in membership but I’m trying to learn how to play the piano for my church. And I was wondering if you instruct people on how to play gospel music. The sheet music is extremely hard for me to get mentally. I watched your videos on learning the chords majors and minors on YouTube. And I pick those up pretty quickly. I have to admit just learning that little bit right there I was blown away how simple it was. But I’m one of those people that can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. So getting one hand to do one thing and one hand to do the opposite thing It’s Tricky. I can’t keep a rhythm on one hand and play the something with a different Rhythm on the other hand. I want to use and strike the keys at the same time with both hands. Anyways I just wanted to know if you teach how to play gospel music.

    • Hi Mike;
Yes, I have a Gospel Music Module (listed as #5), and there’s a related “Rock” Module (#4) which the gospel Module builds on. If you’d like to try it out for a month here’s an All Access link. Hope it’s helpful for you.

  5. I took traditional piano lessons many years ago, but gave up playing due to my inability to advance using the methods that were taught to me at that time by several different instructors. Now that I am at home due to the pandemic, I felt this was a good time to take up playing again. Not only does your numbers approach seem to be a fresh and simple method for learning quickly how to play popular music, but your software appears to be very sophisticated, with lots of features and user friendly. Can’t wait to start practicing with the lessons!

  6. A few months ago, I knew nothing about playing the piano.

Then I read this: learn piano for beginners and now I play many popular songs perfectly by ear even though I had never learned an instrument before.

It’s easier than you think to master the piano if you know these shortcuts.

  7. I really enjoy learning the numbering system for piano my question is this I like to play gospel music can this all be translated into that type of music?

    • Absolutely, in fact that there’s an entire Gospel Module in the members area showing how to do that.

  8. Dear Teacher of all times,

I am totally moved by your ingenuity, sincerity at sharing and love for what helps humanity and the world a better place. It takes a good heart to share an idea capable of improving lives. Since you have decided to be selfless, I have asked God almighty to increase your generational fortunes for ever and ever…….Rev. Black Diamond

  9. I watched the two videos and there was mention of a PDF file. I don’t have a piano yet but was wondering if I can download the PDF for the future. I would like to have a little background even before I have a piano. I am a drummer who wants to learn some piano.

  10. Oh Man, you nail it with just these video’s alone. Someone just getting started could benefit so much with just the two on this page. Clear and concise. Thanks for that.

  11. wow! sir your beautifully laid-out tutorial was just extra ordinary, so simple and has made me have a skill i failed to have over a month just within 30min. Thanks alot.
however, please i would like to understand more about the Major scale and the system you talked about i.e, 3keys between the 1st and 3rd finger and 2keys between the 3rd and 5th finger if you are playing a MAJOR. I tried it and it worked but why i tried playing C D E F G A B C, i found out that only 2keys a found in-between the 1st and 3rd fingers if im sounding the D cord. why is it so sir?

  12. I am very interested in joining your site but am concerned about security. My iPad tells me that it is not a secure site.

    • Great, register on on this page for the 10 free lessons, they’ll help a lot. ๐Ÿ™‚

      • If you are playing a D chord with only 2 notes between the 1 and 3 notes, you are playing a D-minor chord. D-Major the 3 note is a half step higher, D-F#-A. You can get used to hearing the difference between Major chords (happy sounding) and minor chords (sad sounding.) Hope that helps.

        • There’s nothing to worry about regarding security. I THINK you’re talking about the difference between a website URL https:// (called “secure”) and http:// (which is “normal”) https:// URLs are only needed if there’s sensitive information like credit cards being entered. That’s not needed when you’re just watching piano lessons :-), no credit card information or any other “sensitive data” is stored on PianoGenius.com, so that’s not needed. Hope that helps.

          • Am impressed by the way u teach
Iโ€™ve learnt a lot through these short videos
I was hoping u could help with the printable pdf .Thanks

          • Hi Edmond;
When you enter your email you’ll get a direct link to download the printable PDF, as well as links to all ten of the associated piano training videos for it, hope that helps. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Paul, to get all the 10 free videos just enter your email on this page and you’ll get a link to them, that should help you quite a bit.

  13. i’m 84 and not only music illiterate but also computer illiterate. do I get books or dvds; so I can learn slowly? also, how about costs?

  14. Hi Tim!
I keep playing guitar but piano was never made as simple and easy as you did in instant piano genius video’s.

I had watched piano video’s earlier too but nothing like these.
You explain it in such a simple and easy way to remember.

I could never understand Maj and Minor chords and progressions too.
I always used to biheart them ( mug it up)
But your video’s have changed it all.

TO SUM IT UP: I HAVE NO WORDS TO THANK YOU,AS NO WORDS WILL BE ENOUGH TO SHOW MY GRATITUDE TO YOU.
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU TIM !

  15. Speaking of genius. You are easily one in my opinion.Your way of teaching to play the piano is so comprehensive and effective. I’ve learnt a lot from you in just minutes. Your videos are labelled as the best “in my book” i`ve ever come across in terms of tuition.

THANKS!!! ..and continue the good work.

  16. I have tried several other YouTube videos because I want to learn online piano lessons, but they take off too fast or are not as learner friendly. Your videos are far better ๐Ÿ™‚

  17. I salute your excellence in teaching piano. I used to combed through a lot of DVD products and on the internet in an attempt to learn piano in an easy way but to no avail. Thank God I accidentally found your free videos on the intertet. Gone were those days when I used to learn piano as if I’m learning rocket science, now it just easy and fun learning to play piano with your program. Because of the quality of your teaching I quickly enrolled as a member of pianogenius but I had to cancel my membership for reasons beyond my control. But I can’t wait 2 get back on your program again. Right here in Africa your training is working for me.
Tim to me you are the boss of them all!

    • The way I play isn’t completely “by ear”, I usually start with a basic chord chart, or use the *basic* info from sheet music without actually going to the trouble to play it note by note. For me it cuts down the effort to play a song by 90%. I have a whole Module on “Crash Course On Sheet Music” but it’s not about learning to play note for note, it’s how to grab the basic info you need to then play it in your own way. Did you get access to the 10 free videos yet? It’s just a simple matter of applying those types of simple playing to different songs… Be sure to check it out, because I think you’re much, much closer to being able to play how you want than you think.

  18. I’ve just come upon your videos today for the first time and very intrigued by your teaching method. Maybe even hopeful you may be able to help me? I’m classically trained since young via forced curriculum but EXTREMELY frustrated over never being able to play music I hear…only what I can read. I feel I prisoner and have lost my joy for playing though I love piano. I will never forget the joy of my experiences in New York Carnage Hall in my youth but now age 57 I long to play for shear enjoyment at my own will what ever song comes to my mind.
I’ve tried many play by ear methods only to find myself longing for sheet music as is faster and easier. End result is closing my piano and walking away saddened at not accomplishing my goal to play by ear. My question to you is for advice to help deal with feeling boxed in surrounded by notes and traditional methods as if trapped by many years and family generations of traditional forced curriculum training.
Thank You for offering a simpler alternative method bringing joy to the hearts and in the lives of many who wish to make a joyful noise creating beautiful music for shear pleasure. TY

  19. I’m 52 years old. I love piano. But due to my hectic life I dont have the chance to take up piano lesson. Do you think I can catch at my age? Thx

  20. Knowing a bit of drums, i started tottaly “playing” some keyboards.Tim’s videos are great, easy to watch and full of tips. From my few emails with the suppoort of Pianogenius, i only have to say, that they are great, very supportive and generous sharing knowledge, videos and help.! Pianogenius is a surprise..!!

    • Definitely, a good percentage of people who go on to become Piano Genius members have no previous experience playing the piano.

  21. Thanks a lot for sharing your blessings sir as one of the most professional keyboard player.. your video thought me a lot and I really appreciate sir… Now I learn a lot and I will watch it over and over to be a prof. keyboard player too..God Bless and More videos to come…Merry christmas…

  22. Thank a lot. your presentations are so easier to understand and perform. It will be better if you upload more videos on youtube.

    • Using W=Whole Step and H=Half Step, the “formula” for minor scales is WHWWHWW, It’s easiest to see in the key of A-minor because it’s all white note: A B C D E F G A

  23. I’m just beginning my piano lessons and I must say that I feel blessed having the opportunity to access the invaluable insights that you share on this platform. I really I’m grateful and would like to say keep these amazing lessons coming with this touch of uncommon simplicity. Thanks.

  24. Hi TIM,
i recently came across the major scale formula which is WWHWWWH . please will this also be true for a minor scale (WWHWHWW) formula , if not is there a formula for that too and what will it be .

  25. Thank you for sharing your expertise. I thought I have lost my biggest desire to learn to play piano but not when I’ve seen your videos. Definitely a big help…almost crystal clear learning the basics.. Big thanks from here..

  26. i’m not amusic player, even i only man with a bored life, but i keep look for something that can make me a very little happy by listening music sounds…so i decide to eksplore what the music is.. with little hope i can play a music instrument…instrument that stranger for me..And I GET it ….! what such easiest way to fill my sadness with these lessonss.. THANK YOU

  27. Thanks for the fantastic videos.. Really helped! Would like to learn melodies with accompanying chords and if there’s a lesson on that? Not much of a singer hence melodies would help complete a song. Thanks again!

  28. I’m 66yrs young, and I took lessons when I was in my teens. But,
I stopped. Now with you method I’ve returned, and at last feel I
get what I want out of this, just simply play music and have fun
    doing it.

    • Yay, great to hear Leon! It’s sad that the standard way of teaching piano is a forced curriculum that isn’t as enjoyable as it could be and that turns many people off to playing piano completely. Glad you’re playing what you want now. ๐Ÿ™‚

  29. I really wanted to learn how to play piano and this helped me alot. Thankul that there are still people who share their knowledge and talent and not asking much in return. ๐Ÿ™‚ Godspeed!

  30. nice and way more cheap than train to other teacher wich it will make you pay more than 400 $ a year if you’re on indonesia

  31. Just inherited my great great great grandfather’s ship organ. And feel totally comfortable with every chord…wonderful

  32. As a guitar player (beginner) I learned some theory so I recognize how Maj7 chords are built using the 1,3,5,7, Min7: 1, b3,5,b7, etc. Your lessons make perfect sense in translating that same theory the way I learned it for guitar into keyboard. You explained it exactly how I needed to hear it in order for it to make sense. People should realize that the numbering system you use is “for real” in the sense that musicians will commonly refer to the “5” or the “1” as a reference to the 5th, or 1st (respectively) note/chord/diad, etc. in the Major scale. Good Stuff!

  33. You re really a genius. True to words, i have learnt so much more in a few days just watching your videos than i have done over a few months of learning the piano. Its unbelieveable that all these videos are free! Thank you so much. May God bless you real good.

  34. Educating, informing and somehow, entertaining. Your tutorial wiped out all apprehension and fear in figuring out the number system. Thanx a million, and keep up the good work.

  35. Don’t know if you believe in God or not but you and your simplicity are an answer to prayer. Thank you so much! I am a math/science teacher with two musically gifted kids and a husband who plays acoustic guitar. For years all I could do was stare and smile while everyone else sang their hearts out. I have learned 3 worship songs in 1 week and will be practicing them for our “open mic” night at church! Whoohoo! May you be blessed 100 fold the way you have blessed!

  36. Very encouraging; makes sense, especially for those who just want to sit down and play for relaxation and entertainment.

  37. Thanks, that definitely helped me. The song chords of 1 -4 – 5 and how much it’s used was especially interesting.
