Why This Piano Training Is Different
My name is Tim Gross, and I've made my living playing keyboards for the last 35+ years. I've performed with Robin Zander (Cheap Trick), Terri Nunn (Berlin), Tommy Tutone, Chuck Negron (Three Dog Night), Greg Kihn, John Waite, Sammy Hagar, Mickey Thomas (Starship), Kevin Cronin (REO), George Thorogood, and currently tour nationwide with Rick Springfield.
Most of what I learned taking piano lessons ended up being useless to me for what I wanted to do. (So I'm not going to show you that stuff, heh.) In my line of work I need to learn songs quickly.
Here's some beginning training of the quickest way to learn piano. Watch the two videos below on this page to learn more about piano in 15 minutes than some beginning students learn taking months of lessons. You'll also learn my "Number System" that simplifies everything for you.
Here's Part 1:

Here's Part 2 Below:
(Covers adding your left hand, and how to use the Number System
to quickly learn lots of songs: Putting it all together.)

Thanks for watching. I hope you're excited about the power of learning piano through this "Number System" instead of the slow, painful way most people are used to.

I've really enjoyed creating these piano training videos... I've been on stage playing keyboards over 7,000 hours playing all kinds of music, and a lot of what I do the most can be learned quicker and easier than most beginning piano players would ever imagine.
Just promise after I teach you all my secrets that you don't steal my gigs. 🙂
One final thing: I'm not claiming that you can become a world-class piano player overnight (duh!) but many many people have said they've learned more from the 17 minutes of the initial 2 videos than they did in a year of taking regular piano lessons, that everything finally made sense, that it finally "clicked".
With that being said, there's a factor called "finger memory" that requires repetition to get used to changing chords and notes comfortably... with this training you'll be learning the most important things to commit to that "finger memory" instead of the silly stuff lots of piano teachers make you learn that can't be applied to anything else.

A few months ago, I knew nothing about playing the piano.
Then I read this: learn piano for beginners and now I play many popular songs perfectly by ear even though I had never learned an instrument before.
It’s easier than you think to master the piano if you know these shortcuts.
wanna see part 3
Dear Teacher of all times,
I am totally moved by your ingenuity, sincerity at sharing and love for what helps humanity and the world a better place. It takes a good heart to share an idea capable of improving lives. Since you have decided to be selfless, I have asked God almighty to increase your generational fortunes for ever and ever…….Rev. Black Diamond
I watched the two videos and there was mention of a PDF file. I don’t have a piano yet but was wondering if I can download the PDF for the future. I would like to have a little background even before I have a piano. I am a drummer who wants to learn some piano.
Absolutely you can download the PDF for later, just put in your name/email to get the free login/access for that. 🙂
Hi Tim,
You are amazing. I wish to have your all piano lessons. Is there any Cd I can buy?
No, all the training is online, you can register here if you want to check it out. 🙂
wow! sir your beautifully laid-out tutorial was just extra ordinary, so simple and has made me have a skill i failed to have over a month just within 30min. Thanks alot.
however, please i would like to understand more about the Major scale and the system you talked about i.e, 3keys between the 1st and 3rd finger and 2keys between the 3rd and 5th finger if you are playing a MAJOR. I tried it and it worked but why i tried playing C D E F G A B C, i found out that only 2keys a found in-between the 1st and 3rd fingers if im sounding the D cord. why is it so sir?
If you are playing a D chord with only 2 notes between the 1 and 3 notes, you are playing a D-minor chord. D-Major the 3 note is a half step higher, D-F#-A. You can get used to hearing the difference between Major chords (happy sounding) and minor chords (sad sounding.) Hope that helps.
I am very interested in joining your site but am concerned about security. My iPad tells me that it is not a secure site.
There’s nothing to worry about regarding security. I THINK you’re talking about the difference between a website URL https:// (called “secure”) and http:// (which is “normal”) https:// URLs are only needed if there’s sensitive information like credit cards being entered. That’s not needed when you’re just watching piano lessons :-), no credit card information or any other “sensitive data” is stored on PianoGenius.com, so that’s not needed. Hope that helps.
I’m a beginner and very interesting knowing how to place fingers on the keys.
Great, register on on this page for the 10 free lessons, they’ll help a lot. 🙂
Can you suggest a digital keyboard to purchase so I can get started . Digital. ? 88 key?
I put together some links to keyboards I like >> here, FYI practically speaking a 76-key keyboard is just as useful as an 88, because you simply never play the very very top and bottom notes of a piano. There are of course many other good digital keyboards as well, but I feel those are good buys for the different price points.
Sir you really are a genius.I thought it would be a great deal to learn piano, but soon after watching your methods I realized how easy and convincing it is.
i’m 84 and not only music illiterate but also computer illiterate. do I get books or dvds; so I can learn slowly? also, how about costs?
Paul, to get all the 10 free videos just enter your email on this page and you’ll get a link to them, that should help you quite a bit.
Hi Tim!
I keep playing guitar but piano was never made as simple and easy as you did in instant piano genius video’s.
I had watched piano video’s earlier too but nothing like these.
You explain it in such a simple and easy way to remember.
I could never understand Maj and Minor chords and progressions too.
I always used to biheart them ( mug it up)
But your video’s have changed it all.
TO SUM IT UP: I HAVE NO WORDS TO THANK YOU,AS NO WORDS WILL BE ENOUGH TO SHOW MY GRATITUDE TO YOU.

Played guitar for years, now want to learn Piano
Great, already being familiar with playing music on guitar should be a good leapfrog starting step. 🙂
I insist you to learn faster, he is best teacher ,and he is brilliant than other traditional teachers
I salute your excellence in teaching piano. I used to combed through a lot of DVD products and on the internet in an attempt to learn piano in an easy way but to no avail. Thank God I accidentally found your free videos on the intertet. Gone were those days when I used to learn piano as if I’m learning rocket science, now it just easy and fun learning to play piano with your program. Because of the quality of your teaching I quickly enrolled as a member of pianogenius but I had to cancel my membership for reasons beyond my control. But I can’t wait 2 get back on your program again. Right here in Africa your training is working for me.
Tim to me you are the boss of them all!
Thanks.
Really glad to get your free video tips. Its really incredible.
Your piano tips have really made me very interested learn piano though i hv not learned it since my childhood. Thank you very much.
I’ve just come upon your videos today for the first time and very intrigued by your teaching method. Maybe even hopeful you may be able to help me? I’m classically trained since young via forced curriculum but EXTREMELY frustrated over never being able to play music I hear…only what I can read. I feel I prisoner and have lost my joy for playing though I love piano. I will never forget the joy of my experiences in New York Carnage Hall in my youth but now age 57 I long to play for shear enjoyment at my own will what ever song comes to my mind.
I’ve tried many play by ear methods only to find myself longing for sheet music as is faster and easier. End result is closing my piano and walking away saddened at not accomplishing my goal to play by ear. My question to you is for advice to help deal with feeling boxed in surrounded by notes and traditional methods as if trapped by many years and family generations of traditional forced curriculum training.
Thank You for offering a simpler alternative method bringing joy to the hearts and in the lives of many who wish to make a joyful noise creating beautiful music for shear pleasure. TY
The way I play isn’t completely “by ear”, I usually start with a basic chord chart, or use the *basic* info from sheet music without actually going to the trouble to play it note by note. For me it cuts down the effort to play a song by 90%. I have a whole Module on “Crash Course On Sheet Music” but it’s not about learning to play note for note, it’s how to grab the basic info you need to then play it in your own way. Did you get access to the 10 free videos yet? It’s just a simple matter of applying those types of simple playing to different songs… Be sure to check it out, because I think you’re much, much closer to being able to play how you want than you think.
You’re method of teaching is incredible. Are these extra videos free also. Ty
Awesome concept and video lessons to help anyone play the piano with more confidence and knowledge about key changes! Keep the videos coming Piano Genius! ??
I’m 52 years old. I love piano. But due to my hectic life I dont have the chance to take up piano lesson. Do you think I can catch at my age? Thx
It’s never too late to start having fun playing the piano, and I stress “playing”, not practicing. Have fun doing it, that’ll keep you coming back 🙂
It’s great to have

A quick question: is your system also applicable to newbies (just start to learn to play)?
Definitely, a good percentage of people who go on to become Piano Genius members have no previous experience playing the piano.

Hi TIM,
i recently came across the major scale formula which is WWHWWWH . please will this also be true for a minor scale (WWHWHWW) formula , if not is there a formula for that too and what will it be .
Using W=Whole Step and H=Half Step, the “formula” for minor scales is WHWWHWW, It’s easiest to see in the key of A-minor because it’s all white note: A B C D E F G A
Thank you for sharing your expertise. I thought I have lost my biggest desire to learn to play piano but not when I’ve seen your videos. Definitely a big help…almost crystal clear learning the basics.. Big thanks from here..

I’m 66yrs young, and I took lessons when I was in my teens. But,
I stopped. Now with you method I’ve returned, and at last feel I
get what I want out of this, just simply play music and have fun
doing it.
Yay, great to hear Leon! It’s sad that the standard way of teaching piano is a forced curriculum that isn’t as enjoyable as it could be and that turns many people off to playing piano completely. Glad you’re playing what you want now. 🙂
Good day Brother!!
I don’t have yet a piano but I am willing to learn how to play it.i can’t find your part 3 tutorial for the beginner
Kenneth, just subscribe on this page to get access to all 10 free videos that are available. And by the way, any keyboard will do getting started, here’s a small list of keyboards that are smaller and reasonably priced to get you started. 🙂
to quote Tim “stop learning specific things, and start learning everything.” So cool!!! We are learning together. Let’s have fun.
I really wanted to learn how to play piano and this helped me alot. Thankul that there are still people who share their knowledge and talent and not asking much in return. 🙂 Godspeed!
nice and way more cheap than train to other teacher wich it will make you pay more than 400 $ a year if you’re on indonesia
its very interesting and easy to learn piano. thanks for your contribution.
Just inherited my great great great grandfather’s ship organ. And feel totally comfortable with every chord…wonderful
Wow Gretchen, that sounds amazing.
As a guitar player (beginner) I learned some theory so I recognize how Maj7 chords are built using the 1,3,5,7, Min7: 1, b3,5,b7, etc. Your lessons make perfect sense in translating that same theory the way I learned it for guitar into keyboard. You explained it exactly how I needed to hear it in order for it to make sense. People should realize that the numbering system you use is “for real” in the sense that musicians will commonly refer to the “5” or the “1” as a reference to the 5th, or 1st (respectively) note/chord/diad, etc. in the Major scale. Good Stuff!
It Really Works… Thanks Piano Genius…
You re really a genius. True to words, i have learnt so much more in a few days just watching your videos than i have done over a few months of learning the piano. Its unbelieveable that all these videos are free! Thank you so much. May God bless you real good.
It has helpd me wthin 30min ,bt i wil prcts mre,God sent you for me ,thnk u
Educating, informing and somehow, entertaining. Your tutorial wiped out all apprehension and fear in figuring out the number system. Thanx a million, and keep up the good work.
Don’t know if you believe in God or not but you and your simplicity are an answer to prayer. Thank you so much! I am a math/science teacher with two musically gifted kids and a husband who plays acoustic guitar. For years all I could do was stare and smile while everyone else sang their hearts out. I have learned 3 worship songs in 1 week and will be practicing them for our “open mic” night at church! Whoohoo! May you be blessed 100 fold the way you have blessed!
Amen! @Kat .. This program is truly a God sent. May God bless you guys
Thanks for the kind words Kat! Glad to hear it’s opened up what you’re able to do, that’s wonderful 🙂
thnx a lot. it really helped me. 🙂
Very encouraging; makes sense, especially for those who just want to sit down and play for relaxation and entertainment.
Thanks, that definitely helped me. The song chords of 1 -4 – 5 and how much it’s used was especially interesting.
