This video from the “Song Detective” Module is only available to non-members this week so be sure to watch it now.

This Module is fun, it teaches you how to identify the verse, chorus, b-section/pre-chorus, and bridge parts of songs by first having you listen through and take your best guess, then see how you did.

This is a song of mine that I sang and played all the parts on called “If I Told You I Love You“, and you can see the verse/chorus etc. song parts display on the left side of the screen as the song plays. Being able to identify and break down songs like this is an important step towards being able to play songs quickly.

  1. Never knew them as pre choruses. I’ve only ever called them a bridge. Now I know. That said I’ve never had any music lessons since primary school on recorder

    1. The difference between “pre-choruses” (also called “b-sections” and a “bridge” is that a bridge is a different part that usually only happens once in a song, while “pre-choruses/b-sections” usually happen every time between a verse and a chorus (if the song has them.)

  2. This is a “catchy” number unlike much of “today’s” music. You did a nice job of combining every element and putting it altogether. I enjoyed it.

  3. That “Down Chorus,” was a doozy Tim. 😀 I did mix up a B-Section with the chorus after the bridge… 🙁

I would use the elements we learned in the earlier lessons for the final choruses… When the Voice came of the chorus, I thought “Solo over Chorus.” Should I expect a solo to be more distinct? If so, then my labeling of the last two chorus elements… I technically got them wrong?

    1. As long as you could recognize the chorus part, whether you were calling it “solo over chorus” or something else doesn’t matter much… I pretty much kept adding everything available to the end choruses, there’s the repetitive guitar-sounding line that could be thought of as a simple “solo” part… The added vocal stuff over the choruses would be called “vocal scat over chorus”.

I also do the vocal “turn the page” part from the bridge over the final choruses out but the “turn the page” vocals are then being done over the chorus chords instead of the bridge chords, so that could be confusing as well. Sounds like you’re getting it. 🙂

  4. I’m pretty proud of myself…this time I remembered the “B-sections” and got the song down right…only I called the 1st chorus at the end simply “Chorus” and not “Down Chorus” (does it really matter?) and I put in an extra “chorus” but I did get the outro in. It’s neat to have learnt the structures of songs. Great exercise!

        1. Same. That was so satisfying. And now I’ve got this song in my head for the rest of the day 🙂
Seriously, a great tune and great way to teach structure. Thanks.
