For Immediate Release

On April 12th keyboardist Tim Gross performed with the Oregon Symphony at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall in Portland, it was the first of six performances scheduled with Rick Springfield’s rock band performing with a full symphony orchestra.

A special focus for Tim in preparing for the concert was the “solo” performance of The Beatles song “She’s Leaving Home” in which he played the traditional harp part on his keyboard to accompany the strings section. With his keyboard/harp part literally being the only instrument keeping constant time in the song, it was a critical part to get right.

“Performing with a full orchestra was definitely a step outside of my normal comfort zone,” said Tim, “I took classical piano lessons until I was a teenager but rock musicians don’t normally read from sheet music, we usually play from memory or from simple chord charts and frankly I don’t read sheet music on a regular basis. I had to combine how I normally learn with what I anticipated the symphony conductor would expect, and fortunately it all turned out great.”

The symphony/rock hybrid show was a big hit with the fans, and with Rick Springfield’s band members as well. Tim summed up the experience by jokingly saying, “After playing in rock bands for 30 years, I think this one symphony show finally convinced my parents that I’m a ‘real musician’!”
